How to Edit Search Engine Friendly (SEF) URLs Inside Joomla By Using JoomSEF Plugin
After enabling JoomSEF plugin, you will notice that your article URL will appear in the following strings:
/home/your-article-category/your-article-title OR
/home/uncategorised/your-article-title
Notice the " home " or " home/uncategorised " subdirectories which may tempted you to remove them in order to make your URLs shortened or appear more professional.
We will show you how to shorten the long URLs by using the JoomSEF plugin. You need to activate JoomSEF first in order to make this work for you. Here are the steps you need to follow:
Login to your Joomla Administrator and click on Components → ARTIOJoomSef
Click on Manage SEF URLs
You shall see a list of articles as seen below. In our example, we are going to edit 2 articles and shorten them from the long ugly URLs into shortened version.
Example:
From home/new-article-category/lorem-ipsum-part-1 into lorem-ipsum-part-1
From home/uncategorised/lorem-ipsum-part-2 into lorem-ipsum-part-2
On the SEF URL column, click once on the article title and start shortening the article title.
Press Save & Close button in order to repeat the same steps for the rest of the articles (e.g. lorem-ipsum-part-2 as below)
Once you've made all necessary changes to your SEF URLs, you may click on " Manage 301 Redirects " and you shall see all 301 redirections have been set for you automatically as seen below.
Now we need to purge cache, purge SEF URLs and update URLs. First, we click on Component → ARTIOJoomSEF . On the Maintenance tab, click on the following buttons in sequence.
NOTE: For Update URLs button, you need to retry for the second attempt after the clicking during the first attempt. Try to reclick Update URLs button 20 minutes after the first try to ensure all URLs have been updated properly.
Now, you may check your brand new Joomla article URLs by visiting the main page. Click once on the article link to see the latest changes.
