How to Create & Manage Categories in Magento

This tutorial shall be divided into 3 sections:

How to Create a Category in Magento
How to Add a Category Image in Magento
How to List All Available Categories in Magento

Section 1: How to Create a Category in Magento


Login to your Magento administrator dashboard and click on Catalog >> Categories.



On the left you will see the available categories (if any) and above them you will see two options - Add Root Category and Add Subcategory.

To create a new category, you just need to click on "Add Root Category" and enter your new category name as follow:


To create a new subcategory, you just need to click on "Add Subcategory" and enter your new subcategory name as follow:

For both category and subcategory, remember to press the Save button to save changes.

NOTE: After creating both category and subcategory. You need to "drag-and-drop" the subcategory into your newly created category. You can see our example subcategory Level 1 have been included inside the new category called Managed Service.



From the other tabs available you can also manage:

Content - This is where you can add category image, description, Add CMS Block
Display Settings - You can set category Display Mode, whether it is Anchor (i.e. whether or not it should inherit the products in its subcategories) and the product listing sorting options;
Search Engine Optimization - You can choose URL key, which, if set, will be used in the links to this category. This is useful for SEO purposes since you're going to include as many relative keywords as possible in the URL. If the category is called "CS", you may want to set this field to "cloud-servers" to include two additional keywords in the link.
Category Products - This allows you to add existing products to the category
Custom Design - you can select the design for this category, as well as its layout;
Schedule Design Update - This help to schedule the update for a certain time.


Section 2: How to Add a Category Image in Magento



Login to your Magento admin area >> Catalog >> Categories and select the category which you want to add an image to.

Then click the Content tab and click on the Upload button next to the Category Image field.



Upload the image from your computer. The image will appear in the Category Image field and you should click Save button on the top right corner to apply the changes.



Section 3: How to List All Available Categories in Magento


Login to your Magento admin area >> Catalog >> Categories



From the Categories menu on the left click Expand All and your whole category tree will be displayed.
